William has gone through stages where he has not wanted to go under-water, jump or dive in, or really do much in the water, aside from play with (i.e. reach for or throw) balls (apparently very "normal"... but very tiresome for me, when trying to keep up with a class). Upon the recommendation of our instructor, we started going to open swim each week--and allowing William to play in the water on his own terms--to get William excited about the water again. It worked--and fast! As of a few weeks ago, he was able to swim (on his own) underwater for 8 seconds, and as of last weekend, he was up to 11 seconds!!! We are pretty impressed, especially considering that it wasn't too long ago that he was in one of his anti-underwater phases. We think we're past the point of wavering fear now, and hope that the next session of swimming (starting next week!) will be very beneficial to his swimming skills.
